United Methodist Church bishops laud Pope Leo XIV on his election

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church extends its warmest congratulations to Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost) on his election as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

"We are inspired by Pope Leo XIV's vision for a missionary church that builds bridges and dialogue, with open arms," said Bishop Tracy S. Malone, president of the Council of Bishops. "His commitment to humility, being close to the people, and seeking ways to embody the gospel message among all people resonates deeply with our values as United Methodists."

The Council of Bishops looks forward to our continued relationship with the Catholic Church in different parts of the world, being bearers of God's love, justice, and faithfulness to all, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

As Pope Leo XIV embarks on his papacy ministry, the Council of Bishops offers prayer for him, seeking God's guidance and blessing. We pray for wisdom, strength, spiritual insight, and courage as he leads the Catholic Church in these difficult times. May his leadership continue to be marked by humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving all people.
