The Thursday of Holy Week, the day on which the Last Supper and the institution of the Lord's Supper is commemorated. Since the Gospel of John records that the Last Supper included Jesus' washing of the disciples' feet, in some churches the ceremony of footwashing also is observed on this day. Holy Thursday is also referred to as Maundy Thursday.
