Get Them Talking is a series of monthly resources to help families lead conversations about issues of faith during dinner, devotions, a drive or anytime .

Scripture

“Whatever you do, do it from the heart for the Lord and not for people.” Colossians 3:23, Common English Bible

Reflection

Sometimes we are asked to do things we don’t want to do. It could be math homework, traveling for work or practicing a musical instrument. When that happens, it is tempting to just do the minimum so we can be done quickly and get back to something more enjoyable. The Bible tells us, however, that we should always do our best, as if we were doing it for God.

We should try our best, even when we are doing things we would rather not do. We may still make mistakes, but we will do better when we try our hardest.

Get them talking

  • What is something you have to do that you would rather not do? (Parents, answer this too!)
  • If you worked at that unpleasant task as if you were doing it for God, how would that change what you do?
  • What is one trick you use to help make difficult tasks more enjoyable?
  • How can we help each other get things done?

Prayer

Dear God, teach me to do everything as if I’m doing it for you. Amen.

Activity

Take on a big project together. Consider finding a place where you can serve as a family. UMVIM is a great place to start. Or maybe there's a storage area in your home that needs to be cleaned out, a room that needs to be painted. Work together and do it as if you’re doing it for God.
