The Evangelical United Brethren Church is one of two denominations that merged in 1968 to form The United Methodist Church.

The United Methodist Church gets its name from two denominations: The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Many United Methodists know about the Wesleys and the history that followed, but may be less familiar with the EUB Church's history. Like the Methodists, the EUB Church's history includes mergers and name changes across two centuries. Take this short quiz to both test and improve your knowledge of one of The UMC's predecessor denominations.

Questions compiled by United Methodist Communications staff, with assistance from the Rev. Bonnie McCubbin, director of museums and pilgrimage, Baltimore-Washington Conference of The UMC, and pastor at Historic Old Otterbein United Methodist Church in Baltimore.

  6. Question 6 of 9

What role did Bishop Otterbein play in launching another denomination, the Methodist Episcopal Church?

    • Correct!

      Your answer:

Thomas Coke, Thomas Vassey and Philip William Otterbein were the three persons who ordained Francis Asbury in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Asbury adopted the democratic spirit of the young country he was serving in and refused to take a leadership role unless elected by his peers. This practice is maintained today when the clergy session session of Annual Conference votes on the soon-to-be-ordained clergy. This ecumenical ordination practice also is maintained within today's United Methodist Church when Annual Conferences and bishops invite ecumenical bishops to join them in ordaining clergy.

    • Incorrect.
