Glossary: Episcopal Address, the

An important address given in one of the early sessions of each General Conference by one of the active bishops on behalf of the Council of Bishops. This has been done since 1812. The address reviews the state of the denomination and speaks to future needs and directions for United Methodism. One bishop is selected by the Council of Bishops to present the address and to prepare an initial draft. This is critiqued by the members of the Council and perfected. Upon approval by the Council, it is then presented to the General Conference.
